This arrived today. It was advertised as a Victorian photograph on glass ie an ambrotype.
A strange size of 5×6 inches. Whats different about this one to the others in my collection is the ammount of colour on the plate. Usually they have faded with a trace of gold for the jewellery etc.
In this one, the person and partial background are painted beneath the varnish, but the pillar, plants and curtain etc are painted on the surface of the varnish? It makes for a very colourful 3D effect I’ve not seen before. Amazing.
