Ambrotype and printing frame

When Moo Pa dropped off the Hunter Penrose camera on Saturday he also brought along another Item I had bought at auction a while back.

A lovely tradesman quarter plate ambrotype in wooden frame. Holding a hammer and nail? in his hands.

The newspaper cuttings that make up the rear of the frame are a little confusing as they seem to date, following some Google searches, to pre 1850s. And the centre section looks to come from the Morning Post – Friday 29 September 1848 and documents the trial of the midwife found responsible for the death of Eliza Wilson during an attempted abortion.

I doubt that these newspaper cuttings are contemporary to the plate , but I’m surprised they are several years earlier and not later. So probably spare cuttings and a later reframe. Its tempting to carefully open the frame to see what other info, if any, lays inside about the plate.

Along with the camera lot from auction, it was an added bonus, to find that also included was as a solid 12×15 inch contact printing frame. One of my previous Hunter Penrose camera camera with a similar contact frame. They always prove useful.
