Discarded “poor” negatives

Most analogue photographer must have rolls of negatives that sit appreciated in sleeves and folders. They may be poorly exposed, processed or just uninspiring.

I don’t even recall having a 35mm camera with me on this walk to Kelmscott Manor in the Summer of 2022, but in a drawer I have a sleeve of poorly exposed/processed negatives that I’d not considered giving a second look. Until today.

All frames are very weak and lacking in contrast.

All printed on Ilford Matt FB Classic. F8 32 seconds at Grade 5 variable contrast. Yes Grade 5….

I was very surprised how much detail and tone there is at Grade 5, considering the quality of the negative.

These are still wet in places and just mobile phone shots so a little blotchy in places.

Granted not the most exciting of images but they do show potential, maybe for Bromoil.

At Uni I was always criticised for printing too hard. I do love a contrasty print but the tone in these is still surprising.

I was never any good at reading a neg. Any advice, suggestions or explanations appreciated.
