This is a really sharp plate under all the muck and varnish.
I’ve got hold of an article from one of the journals on how to restore ambrotypes and tintypes. I might have a go at cleaning some plates up, I’d test it out on some old not so good plates first, of course.
The face on this chap is amazing. He must have had bright blue eyes.

Dear Sir,
I’m very curious about that restoring article! Can you tell me where to find it?
greetings from Holland , Ad
Hi Ad,
Having now read that article in full it hasn’t lived up to expectations. It was a research paper more concerned with conservation than restoration. I’ll see if I can find it. Its a hard copy so email me and I’ll pop it in the post to you,
Thanks for taking the time to look at my blog,
Tony
Hi Tony,
I’m sorry it’s a long time ago but I just read your answer. I’d like to read that article but you’ll have to sent it to Holland …aint that a problem??? I do not know what that costs?
