Here are two framed half plate ambrotypes to add to the collection. Purchased off Feepay for a little more than usual.
Mr and Mrs Edward Leigh
Both are dated 20th September 1860 on the reverse.
Mrs Leigh’s studio label reads L.R.Conconi’s Photographic Studio No.1 Fort Hill, Margate
The only reference I can find is to a Miss L Conconi as a photographer at that time but not to where she was based. It’s not a common name.
There’s also a Louis Conconi of Margate that was a watchmaker
From the newspaper archives the shop at 1 Fort Hill was owned by Henry Thomas Goodman in the mid 1860’s. Louisa Rosetta Conconi had married Henry Thomas Goodman at the end of 1860 in Southwark London. In 1871 they are living at 1 Fort Row and Henry is the photographer. Henry died in 1879, the address is given as 6 Fort Row.Hope this helps.
Further to this Louisa Rosetti Goodman died in 1882
Anne you are a star, thank you. How do you find this stuff out??
I look at the British Newspaper archive site and found Mr Goodman at the shop and then I looked on Ancestry for information about him and found he had married Louisa. I have spent a lot of time on family trees and enjoy researching to find out bits of information.Keep buying the glass plates !!
Thanks Anne. Appreciated.
To add
Louisa Conconi had a brother called Thomas David Conconi who was a Paymaster in the Royal Navy, i have his Crimea medal. More interestingly he was married to Christina who’s sister was Sarah Ann Maybrick, she was the common law wife of the suspected Jack the Ripper James Maybrick! Google and you will find out all about it.
Thank you Matthew, I’ll take a look.
