It holds the archives of working class<\/i> <i>organisations from the Chartists to New Labour, including the Labour Party and the Communist Party of Great Britain. The collections provide an insight into the social, political and economic life of the last two centuries<\/i>.<i>&#8220;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Now it might not sound like everyone&#8217;s cup of tea but the member of staff showing us around, Darren, obviously knows his stuff and has a passion for this material. Which always helps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2016\/10\/img_6863.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10844\" src=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2016\/10\/img_6863.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/img_6863.jpg 800w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/img_6863-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/img_6863-768x591.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>You&#8217;d think something from the Labour or Communist archives would have grabbed our attention but no.<\/p>\n<p>It &nbsp;was several copies of&nbsp;<i>The British Workman<\/i>, this was a broadsheet periodical published monthly in England by Partridge and Co in London. It was published between 1855 and 1892 with the aim to<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;promote the health, wealth and happiness of the working classes&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;<\/i>It was illustrated with contemporary engravings with some editions having the first page given over to a single engraving. The text, written by a number of authors was a mixture of socialism and Protestant Christian religion. It strongly advocated <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Temperance_movement\">temperance<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2016\/10\/img_6861.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10842\" src=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2016\/10\/img_6861.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/img_6861.jpg 600w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/img_6861-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>One of the full page engravings. Brilliant.<a href=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2016\/10\/img_6860.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10845\" src=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2016\/10\/img_6860.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/img_6860.jpg 600w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/img_6860-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One phrase that seemed to occur throughout was &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/oiledfeather00powe\">The oiled feathe<\/a>r&#8221;. We&#8217;d never heard of it and details are limited online. Turns out it&#8217;s a moral children&#8217;s book by Philip Bennett Power.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2016\/10\/img_6862.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10843\" src=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2016\/10\/img_6862.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/img_6862.jpg 572w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/img_6862-215x300.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another word I had to Google&#8230;&nbsp;<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/sagacious\">Sagacity<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>And did you know that George Orwell was shot in the neck whilst participating in the Spanish Civil War. Well, you learn something new everyday.
