{"id":12959,"date":"2018-02-08T09:11:29","date_gmt":"2018-02-08T09:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/?p=12959"},"modified":"2019-08-28T14:40:57","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T14:40:57","slug":"beyond-battlefields-kathe-buchler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/beyond-battlefields-kathe-buchler\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond the Battlefields : Kathe Buchler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Thursday I went along to the opening of Beyond the Battlefields: Kathe Buchler&#8217;s Photographs of Germany WWI<\/p>\n<p><em>Grosvener Gallery, Manchester Metropolitan University, Oxford Road, M156BR on until 2nd March 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d not heard of <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/K%C3%A4the_Buchler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kathe Buchler<\/a> before and was intrigued to see she was an early practitioner of the Autochrome process, a popular topic of conversation within the alternative photographic community of late.&nbsp;An autochrome has a visual quality rarely seen nowadays and I always take the opportunity to seek them out when on display.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the monochrome prints on show.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12961\" src=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2018\/02\/Buchler3.jpg\" alt=\"Buchler3\" width=\"504\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Buchler3.jpg 504w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Buchler3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12962\" src=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2018\/02\/Buchler4.jpg\" alt=\"Buchler4\" width=\"504\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Buchler4.jpg 504w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Buchler4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12963\" src=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2018\/02\/Buchler5.jpg\" alt=\"Buchler5\" width=\"504\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Buchler5.jpg 504w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Buchler5-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This has to be my favourite image from the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12964\" src=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2018\/02\/Buchler2.jpg\" alt=\"Buchler2\" width=\"504\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Buchler2.jpg 504w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Buchler2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Buchlers images documenting women at work during WWI were reminiscent of the WWI <a href=\"http:\/\/luna.manchester.ac.uk\/luna\/servlet\/detail\/Manchester~15~15~126~211273?qvq=q:women%2Bat%2Bwork&amp;mi=0&amp;trs=155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women at Work album<\/a> held in the Visual Collections of the John Rylands Library.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12967\" src=\"http:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2018\/02\/Buchler1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Buchler1\" width=\"504\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Buchler1-1.jpg 504w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Buchler1-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Why no images of autochromes? Unfortunately the exhibition was showing modern prints of Buchlers works and no original autochromes. There were some colour reproductions but I seem to have only captured a handful of the monochrome prints. Don&#8217;t get me wrong, the images are immediately striking and each makes you stop and look closer. Its just I&#8217;d gone to see some autochromes&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Go see the exhibition if you get a chance, the Grosvenor Gallery is a small side space in the Holden Gallery. During the opening event there was an exhibition booklet with essays on Kathe Buchler by Melanie Tebbutt, Jacqueline Butler and Matthew Shaul.
