Years ago I had used Potassium Permanganate as a wood ageing stain which works really well. I didn&#8217;t have any so I thought I&#8217;d try the old tea\/vinegar\/steel wool stain. Its very straight forward. I also added some rusty nails for some extra kick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2021\/06\/Rack1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack1-520x390.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soak some steel wool in white vinegar for 24-48 hours, strain and stain. This murky solution is basically Ferrous Acetate which reacts with the natural tannins in the wood. This being cheap pine I thought I&#8217;d add some tannin content by saturating the wood with tea.Just left over tea bags steeped for a couple of hours, and then just painted on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2021\/06\/Rack2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack2-520x390.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When dry you brush on the Ferrous Acetate. I  had read it might take a few minutes to darken&#8230;.. it took seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2021\/06\/Rack3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack3-520x390.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I tested it first on the underside and it obviously hadn&#8217;t had that much tea soaked into it, and was a much lighter stain. Also the straight acetate stain was really nice just on the pine, a silvery aged look. Whereas the tea saturated surfaces went a little further than expected&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2021\/06\/RAck4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/RAck4.jpg 800w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/RAck4-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/RAck4-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/RAck4-520x390.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was surprised how dark it actually went. I might have over done it on the tannin. It went almost black, then with a hint of deep blue, then hours later to a dark grey brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2021\/06\/Rack6b.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack6b.jpg 600w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack6b-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/fourtoes.co.uk\/iblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Rack6b-520x693.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a coat of antique beeswax it now looks like a deep dark brown with a raised grain, Not sure if I like it, so might make another and stain without the tea\/tannins. I have no idea what sort of wood it now looks like.
