Heres a Union Case made by S.Peck & Co made from Bois Ducri. Nope? me neither so I had to look it up.
Bois Durci – A hard, highly polishable composition, made of fine sawdust from hard wood (as rosewood) mixed with blood, and pressed.
Measures 2″ x 1 7/8″ x 5/8″
It hasn’t got a tintype or ambrotype inside but a paper image of some sort. Maybe this is how they were supplied from the manufacturer with a mock up or maybe someone chose to use a paper image rather than a plate?
I suppose that it will give you something to do with the giblets if you do take up taxidermy 😀
Hi, Just a quick comment on your “bois durci” photo case; photo cases were never made of bois durci or gutta-percha as many believe. Peck and Co. developed a thermoplastic composed of shellac and saw dust. Your case dates from the late 1850 to early 1860s and is indeed a Peck thermoplastic case. The original photo would have been a daguerreotype or ambrotype – you photo is a Carte de Visite, a paper photograph popular from 1860 up to the turn of the century. It looks to be from the 1860s.
